India's No. 1 E Rickshaw Manufacturer

How to Start an E-Rickshaw Business in India: A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you considering launching your own company in India? Do you want something that is in demand, sustainable, and reasonably priced? You might want to start your own e-rickshaw company. Electric rickshaws, or e-rickshaws, are increasingly visible on Indian roads, particularly in large cities and small towns where last-mile connectivity is crucial. They use electricity rather than expensive fuel and are low-maintenance and environmentally friendly. The best of all? The need for rapid and reasonably priced transportation is only increasing.

Step 1: Select Your Business Plan

Consider whether you want to operate the e-rickshaw yourself before hopping in.

Should I purchase a fleet and employ drivers?

Would I like to rent out e-rickshaws?

Every model has advantages and disadvantages.

·   Single-owner/driver: Complete control, daily income, and less investment.

·   Owner of a fleet: Greater potential for passive income but higher investment.

·   Long-term profits can be made with the rental model, but it needs careful management.

·   Select the option that best fits your time, money, and business objectives.

Step 2: Do Market Research

Spend some time learning about your neighborhood:

·   Where is the e-rickshaw market? (Markets, colleges, metro stations, railroad stations, etc.)

·   Which routes have already been covered?

·   What is the average cost to passengers?

·   Which hours are the busiest?

·   You can use this to plan pricing, routes, and even branding.

Step 3:  Register Your E-Rickshaw

You can’t just buy one and start driving. You need:

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
  • Permit from the RTO
  • Insurance (third-party is mandatory, comprehensive is better)
  • Driver’s license (usually LMV or specific e-rickshaw badge)

Visit your local RTO or ask the dealership to help with paperwork. Many dealers assist with end-to-end registration support.

Step 4: Choose the Right E-Rickshaw

There are many brands in India offering e-rickshaws: Mahindra, Lohia, Kinetic, YC Electric, Saarthi, and more. While buying, check for:

  • Battery type (lithium-ion lasts longer but costs more)
  • Mileage per charge
  • Charging time
  • Warranty
  • Weight capacity
  • Availability of spare parts and service centers

Step 5: Set Up Charging Arrangements

Charging your rickshaw is just as important as fueling it.

You can:

·   Install a home charging station

·   Use public charging points (if available in your city)

·   Partner with charging hubs for daily charging

·   Charging usually takes 8–10 hours for lead-acid and 3–5 hours for lithium-ion.

Step 6: Make Your Ride Look Professional

Even if you are the only driver, presenting yourself and your e-rickshaw well makes a big difference. Customers prefer clean, well-maintained vehicles and polite drivers.

Things to focus on:

·   Uniform or neat clothes

·   A name board for your rickshaw

·   Clean seating and interiors

·   Basic safety tools (first aid kit, water bottle, phone holder)

Step 7: Start Promoting Your Business

Spread the word in your area:

  • Talk to shops, schools, and hostels to offer regular rides
  • Hand out small flyers in nearby colonies
  • Put your contact number on the back of the rickshaw
  • Offer discounts to first-time riders

If you have a small fleet, you can also:

  • Advertise on social media
  • List your services on Google Business Profile
  • Partner with apps or delivery companies for part-time jobs

So above all you need to know that an e-rickshaw business is more than just driving—it’s a steady, respectful, and green livelihood. With the right mindset and careful planning, you can earn ₹800 to ₹1,500 per day (or more), depending on your area and working hours.

And once you’re confident? You can expand! Buy a second e-rickshaw. Hire a driver. Create your own small transport brand.
